Remotely Administering vWorkspace with Mobile-IT

Along time ago we released a PowerGUI PowerPack that enabled PowerShell based administration of vWorkspace via the handy PowerGUI interface. Since then, a new product has been released at Dell that works with pre-existing PowerPacks. We haven’t found the bandwidth to update the PowerPack to include many of the most recent cmdlets that have been added but the PowerPack still works as expected with the latest 7.5 and 7.6 modules. With the help of the Mobile-IT team, (you won’t need any help setting this up. I’m just a dummy) I got our PowerPack loaded up and accessible via my Droid.

Setting up Mobile-IT is extremely easy. The product installs as a web service. There are a couple different configurations in terms of the end point but it really is as easy as Next->Next->Next. The Mobile-IT admin page is also web-based. All you’ll need to do to get the vWorkspace PowerPack configured is to download and install the correct PowerShell Module and download the PowerPack from PowerGUI.org. Then, in Mobile-IT, go to the packs page and upload the vWorkspace PowerPack.

Once the pack is added you’ll have to create an instance with the Add Instance button. Next, you’ll have to configure the users and devices that are allowed to access the pack. Adding users is really easy and done on the Users tab.

mobileit-usersDevices are added on the Devices tab. ;) Once they have attempted to connect to the Mobile-IT instance they will show up in the list and can be granted access.

mobileit-devicesTo allow any device to access the server, you can change this setting on the Settings page.

Once this is all configured you’ll see that you can access the Mobile-IT instance from one of the many apps that have been developed as Mobile-IT clients. Here are a couple screen shots of the Android app in action. Clicking the folder button on the right hand side of an item will expand the children of that item.

All the PowerPack’s actions are also accessible. This means you can restart a pesky VM or even upgrade PNTools from your lazy boy.

I hope to find some time to update it in the near future to encompass all the PowerShell cmdlets that are now available in the vWorkspace PowerShell module.
